Sheila – How is her change presented?
In the morality play, priestly constructs Sheila’s
character strategically presenting her as an immature
deluded women to demonstrate the change undergoes
as a result of inspectors gooles words. He uses Sheila
as the representation of the younger generation,
targeting them and teaching idea of morals, social
solidarity.
In the beginning of Priestley’s didactic novel, Sheila is
presented as the typical ignorant upper class girl who
lives under a protected bubble created by her capitalist
parents. The materialistic traits are demonstrated by
her delighted reaction to ring Gerald gifted her where
she only “really felt engaged” when given physical
token of their engagement, ring is used as a metaphor
for ownership and commitment from Gerald. Priestly
uses notion of the ring validating their relationship acts
as a metaphor for nature of their marriage, its founded
on upward mobility + strengthening business
relationship. Greedy nature is indicated with the
desperate noun in “never let it go out of my sight” “,
definite “never” shows the superficial nature of
engagement. Priestly presents engagement as
superficial to allow room for Sheila to mature and soon
return ring signifying immediate change in attitudes,
lack of interest superficial things. Her immaturity is
highlighted with her child like addressal of parents
“mommy” “daddy”, this gives her an innocent outlook
implying despite being 24, she’s dependant of her
family and protected in a bubble by her parents
unaware of harsh realities working class women just
like her grough though as a result of their capitalist
selfishness. Priestly presents her character at the start
