These notes were taken during my PGCE surrounding written methods for addition and subtraction. Hopefully they help someone out as they helped me retain information from lectures.

, Core Mathematics Learning Episode 2.2

Demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in the
subject and curriculum
areas, and promote the value of scholarship

TS4 Plan and teach well-structured lessons
4 Promote a love of learning and children’s intellectual curiosity

Learning intentions

- Further develop understanding of progression in addition and
subtraction
- Understand the importance of developing informal and formal
written methods of addition and subtraction
- Become familiar with the stages in developing written methods of
addition and subtraction as outlined by the National Curriculum
(2014)

Key points
Written methods are built upon the methods and understanding of mental
strategies

The importance of developing written methods with understanding is vital
and the use of models and images is essential. This supports
understanding of place value and the structure of mathematics presented
in algorithms (NCETM, 2015)

The major problem with the standard formal written layouts for
calculations is that children are encouraged to lose sense of the value of
numbers. Expanded layouts do not obscure the meaning of the digits;
children are still aware that they are handling hundreds, tens and units
(Haylock, 2019)

The National Curriculum advice for Y2 is that ‘Recording addition and
subtraction in columns supports place value and prepares for formal
written methods with larger numbers”.
Adding and subtracting 1- and 2-digit numbers to 20

- Use manipulatives
- Use a number line
- Use an empty number line (14-8=?)
