Security & Control in the Custodial
Environment
P1: Describe the physical, dynamic and procedural security considerations in a custodial
environment.

Physical security is creating active barriers in order to stop prisoners from escaping
and keeping them under control. By doing this it creates a secure environment and ensures
there's less of a risk of conflict between prisoners. This can be done through items such as
locks and high walls surrounding the perimeter and also personnel as prison guards/officers
are there to assure security is high and keep everything under control. Physical security is
also there so the prisoners can be monitored since physical security includes items such as
CCTV in order to monitor the prisoners ensuring their safety and keeping security tight. Due
to physical security, the safety of the staff, the environment, and fellow prisoners are
assured.
Dynamic security is the process of gathering information keeping data basis in order
to keep order within the prison. This could be from getting intel on that particular person in
order to predict and prevent any attempts of breaching security. This could also include
those with drug addictions were not attempting to bring the drug into the prison through
sneaking it in. By also separating rival gang members who may be kept within the prison it
reduces the risk of anything bad happening. Having a good relationship between staff and
the prisoners would also be linked to dynamic security since if there was not a good
relationship they be more likely to start being violent to the staff. Other ways to put dynamic
security into actions would be monitoring their interactions with others such as listening to
phone calls and being there when they meet up with people outside the prison.
Procedural security is the policies within the prison that the staff have to follow in
order to secure the premises effectively. This could be as simple as ensuring all doors are
locked and reporting any suspicious behaviour in order to protect and the premises from any
attempts of escaping/rioting. This would also be abiding legislation like the data protection
which includes your own personal information. They should also communicate tactfully in
order to prevent a situation from escalating.
Prison Categorisation is the factor of putting different prisoners within different
prisons which works effectively since these have different security methods and separates
convicts who may be a danger to one another. This is proportioned due to the severity of the
crime, likeness to escape and length of the sentence at the prison. A consideration also
taken in would be how much of a threat they would pose if they were to escape.
Category A prisons are customised in order to hold prisoners who would pose a high
threat to society and would be likely to attempt an escape. Prisoners here would usually
have committed a serious crime which is why they would pose such a threat. These people
may often be re offenders and the people who are in this prison are usually those who have
commited multiple rapes, peadophiles, mass murders or active terrorism.
Following this would be category B prisons. The people who are in this prison are
usually those who have been sentenced to 10 years or more. People in this prison have also
usually attempted to escape from previous prisons. This means they would pose a bigger
than average threat to the public. Crimes usually committed to result in being in this prison
