ASME B31.3 OPEN & CLOSED BOOK (165 Q&A)
(FOR API 570 & SI EXAMINATIONS)
HUGE TIP: ASME B31.3 is easy … You get about 20 – 25 Questions that require
you use “BASE CODE” (Most are Open Book) … Base Code = Chap 1 – 6 (Pg 1-85)
& you must be able to quickly use “bookmarks” feature & locate Stress Tables …
Table A-1 (Pg 156 CS) gives Value “S” & Table A-1 B (Pg 333) gives Value “E” …
Take this practice exam “CLOSED BOOK” first … answer what you can, then go
back and use “OPEN BOOK” practicing using “Bookmarks” features … Practice 
(Remember, all who pass exams use the Study Guide)
PROCESS PIPING Chapter I … Section 300
General Statements … You should understand the following about ASME B31.3
(b) Responsibilities
(1) Owner. The owner of a piping installation shall have overall responsibility for compliance with this
Code, and for establishing the requirements for design, construction, examination, inspection, and
testing that will govern the entire fluid handling or process installation of which the piping is a part. The
owner is also responsible for designating piping in Category D, Category M, High Pressure, and High
Purity Fluid Services, and for determining if a specific Quality System is to be employed. [See paras.
300(d)(4) through (7) and Appendix Q.]
(3) Manufacturer, Fabricator, and Erector. The manufacturer, fabricator, and erector of piping are
responsible for providing materials, components, and workmanship in compliance with the
requirements of this Code and of the engineering design.
(c) Intent of the Code
(1) It is the intent of this Code to set forth engineering requirements deemed necessary for safe design
and construction of piping installations.
(2) This Code is not intended to apply to the operation, examination, inspection, testing, maintenance,
or repair of piping that has been placed in service. The provisions of this Code may optionally be applied
for those purposes, although other considerations may also be necessary.

(d) Determining Code Requirements  YOU MUST KNOW THE BASE CODE
(2) For metallic piping not designated by the owner as Category M, High Pressure, or High Purity Fluid
Service (see para. 300.2 and Appendix M), Code requirements are found in:
Chap. I thru VI (Base Code) & Fluid Service Requirements are found in:
(a) Chap III for materials … (b) Chap II, Part 3, for components … (c) Chap II, Part 4, for joints
300.1.1 Content and Coverage
(a) This Code prescribes requirements for materials and components, design, fabrication, assembly,
erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping.
(b) Code applies to piping for all fluids, including (Very similar to API 570 Section 1 Included Services):
(1) Raw, intermediate, and finished chemicals … (2) Petroleum products …
(3) Gas, steam, air, and water … (4) Fluidized solids … (5) Refrigerants … (6) Cryogenic fluids
(c) See Fig. 300.1.1 for a diagram illustrating the application of B31.3 piping at equipment. The
joint connecting piping to equipment is within the scope of B31.3.

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON THE NEXT PAGE REGARDING CODE COVERAGE

,300.1.3 Exclusions. This Code (ASME B31.3) excludes the following:
(a) Piping systems designed for internal gage pressures at or above zero but less than 105 kPa (15 psi),
provided the fluid handled is nonflammable, nontoxic, and not damaging to human tissues as defined
in 300.2, and its design temperature is from −29°C (−20°F) through 186°C (366°F)
(b) Power boilers in accordance with BPV Code Section I and boiler external piping which is required
to conform to B31.1
(c) Tubes, tube headers, crossovers, and manifolds of fired heaters, which are internal to the heater
enclosure
(d) Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and other fluid handling or processing
equipment, including internal piping and connections for external piping
Packaged Equipment piping (skid-mounted) Follows B31.3 Code rules
