1) Introducción
L'Arlésienne es música incidental compuesta por Georges Bizet para el drama en tres actos
del mismo nombre de Alphonse Daudet, y estrenada en el Théâtre du Vaudeville de París el
1 de octubre de 1872. Interpretados entre o al mismo tiempo que los diálogos
(melodramas), los diferentes números están vinculados a la trama literaria o teatral.
Subrayan la dramaturgia, profundizan en la psicología de los personajes, describen
acontecimientos no representados en escena o aseguran la transición entre escenas o
actos (intermezzo).
2) Adaptación orquesta sinfónica
Esta partitura también se adaptó en dos suites de concierto para orquesta sinfónica, de
cuatro movimientos cada una. Algunos temas, como los villancicos "La Marcho di Rei" (cf.
La Marche des rois, basada en la Marche de Turenne atribuida a Jean-Baptiste Lully) o "La
danso di chivau frus" (La danse des chevaux fringants/fous/en rut), se inspiran directamente
en la música tradicional provenzal. Sus adaptaciones y sobre todo sus orquestaciones
quedarán, junto con El sueño de una noche de verano de Felix Mendelssohn y Peer Gynt de
Edvard Grieg, como el mejor ejemplo del género teatral-musical.
3) Adaptación ópera
La música incidental fue un encargo de Léon Carvalho, entonces director del Théâtre du
Vaudeville.
4) Adaptación piano
En 1900, Sergei Rachmaninov realizó una transcripción para piano solo del Minueto de
L'Arlésienne. La revisó en 1922.
5) La partitura
La partitura está dividida en veintisiete números que incluyen la obertura, dieciséis
"melodramas" cortos de unos pocos compases, seis coros, intermedios e intermezzos. La
orquesta se redujo a veintiséis músicos, con extras cantando los coros, y el compositor
dirigiendo las ocho únicas representaciones. Aunque la música fue bien recibida, la obra de
Daudet fue un amargo fracaso, el tercero consecutivo tras Lise Tavernier y Tartarin de
Tarascon.
