Character evaluation

Chapter 1-

Mr. Hyde is an evil character who harms others and is in some relation to Jekyll.

Utterson is a lawyer that is “undemonstrative at best’’.

Chapter 2-

Utterson has many friends.

We find Lanyon has fallen out with Jekyll because of his “unscientific” experiments.

Utterson cares for his friends as he has nightmares over his thoughts of Hyde towards
Jekyll.

Chapter 3-

Utterson is caring as he discusses Jekyll’s will with him.

Chapter 4-

Mr Hyde’s violent nature is exposed when we see Sir Danvers Carew being murdered
because of him although he is polite. We can infer from this that he likes to target
vulnerable people.

Sir Danvers Carew’s respectable position is also shown when his cries are heard from
the square for him.

Chapter 5-

Guest (head clerk) compared the handwriting of Jekyll’s and Hyde’s and finds them to
be from the same hand. This is significantly important as it raises the question as to why
Jekyll forged a letter for Hyde. This increases tension. Jekyll’s selfishness is also shown
as he only cares for his own reputation

Chapter 6-

Eerie atmosphere suddenly brought to tension as Jekyll socializes, then suddenly stops.
Lanyon claims he will die soon from shock. Adds tension because we question what
made Lanyon this way.
