Performance is related to: needs, goals, rewards, self-regulation, deviant behavior, talent and coaching.
The application of theory in practice (in different achievement context):
 Motivating
 Guiding and coaching
 Improving
Central pillars:
 Needs
 Goals
 Rewards
 Social context

How to answer the why question?
Determinism Everything is set
in stone
Determinism: every event is an unavoidable and necessary consequence of
prior circumstances.
Determinism does not mean that the world can be fully understood and be explained to humans
Game of life (Conway, 1970s)
Conway’s deterministic world
 Full square with < 2 neighbors  dies
 Full square with 2 or neighbors  lives on
 Full square with > 3 neighbors  dies
 Empty square with 3 neighbors  is born
 Simple world can be unpredictable, reality is much more complex
 Assumption of Motivation Science, if we understand the causes of behavior, we can predict
behavior.
