Today’s society is rapidly evolving with advanced technological innovations and
development. The field of healthcare has benefited from the leaps of technological
innovations. The mode of healthcare delivery has been revolutionized with the advent of
electronic health records. Electronic health records have been supported by literature to
improve patient safety and promote positive patient outcomes. However, to integrate this
technology successfully to reap its benefits, it is essential to have healthcare workers on
board to use this system.
Nurses of the forensic institution under study have grown accustomed to paper
charting. The institution is 150 years old and is just now evolving to electronic health
records. The significance of this study is that by identifying key predictors and facilitating
conditions of technology acceptance, the rate of technology acceptance (EHR adoption) by
nurses will increase. With over 350 nurses employed to this institution and with them being
the backbone of the health organization, it is essential for them to be onboard with the new
landscape of healthcare
It is vital to identify factors that will predict acceptance of the new system by users
such as perceived usefulness and ease of use of the system. Formulating an effective
training/support structure and establishing a steering committee responsible for providing
education and support for technology literacy would be the proposed solutions for the
sample population.

Background and Significance of the Problem
The aim of the study is to explore technology acceptance (adoption of electronic
health records) by nurses employed at a mental health facility in Petersburg VA. The
theoretical framework is based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) which

how users come to accept and use a technology. The model suggests that acceptance
of technology based on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of the system.
Solutions will be geared towards increasing acceptance using the 2 constructs outlined in
the TAM. (Scherer, Siddiq & Tondeur, 2019).

significance of this study is that by identifying key predictors and facilitating conditions of a
technology acceptance model framework, the rate of technology acceptance (EHR
adoption) by nurses will increase. With rapidly evolving and growing technology, the face
of healthcare is changing, Nieman (2017) stated that information technology
advancement in healthcare improves the quality of healthcare delivery, increases patient
safety, decreases medical errors, and strengthens the interaction between patients and
healthcare providers. With over 350 nurses employed to this institution and with them
being the backbone of the health organization, it is essential for them to be on-board
with the new landscape of healthcare.
In the Technology Acceptance model framework, Davis (1989) highlighted 2
constructs, perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEU), which he
depicted directly contributed to a person’s intent to adopt technology (Scherer, Siddiq &
Tondeur, 2019). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rate of technology
acceptance among nurses using the technology acceptance model (TAM) and identify

solutions to positively influence the intention to use the new electronic health record
system at the facility.
