General info:
- Surah no. 20
- Makkan surah, short rhyming ayat, stories of prophet musa (As)
- Starts with separate letters ‫ ط‬and ‫ه‬
- Some scholars say that it was the name of prophet (PBUH)
- 1-9: The Introduction of the story, 24-35 story of Musa
- Period of revelation, same as Surah Mariam, before or after migration to Habasha.
- The prophet (PBUH) made dua that one of the Omar's become part of Islam.
- The story of Umar ibn Al-Khattab becoming a muslim is related to the surah.
- It is said to have Allah's supreme name, ‫االسم األعظم‬, along with surah 2&3.
- the Surah starts with consoling the prophet (PBUH) and speaks of Allah's encompassing
knowledge and most beautiful names.
- The story of Musa (‫ )عليه السالم‬is then mentioned with many details.
- The story of Adam (‫ )عليه السالم‬is mentioned.
Ayat translation:
Ayat 1: The Arabic letters ‫ ط‬and ‫ه‬, are among the separated letters; the meaning is only known to
Allah.
Ayat 2: The Quran wasn't given(or sent down) to the prophet to cause him distress; over it's
acceptance or rejection by his people.
- according to another interpretation the prophet had been praying all night to the point that his
feet became swollen; so this verse was revealed conveying that the Quran was not sent to the
prophet to exhaust himself in acts of worship.
Ayat 3-4: The Quran was sent as a reminder to the ones who fear, one who fears refers to the
reverence of god "muttaqin". The Quran is a revelation from he who created the earth and the
highest heavens.
Ayat 5:
‫الرحمن على العرش استوى‬. The compassionate appears in the Quran as an adjective as a way of
describing Allah, one of his proper names. The only ayah in the Quran talking about the ‫عرش‬.
Ayat 6: This ayah calls attention to Allah's sole ownership of everything in existence. Since
everything belongs to Allah, one should ask only him to fulfill one's request.The prophet
Muhammad (PBUH) said: " When you ask, ask only of god; when u seek help, seek help only
from god!"
Ayat 7: What is secret refers to hidden talk, and what is more hidden refers to what lies deeply
hidden in the soul, only Allah knows.
Ayat 8:The most beautiful names belong to Allah, ‫االسماء الحسني‬.
Ayat 9: This Ayat introduces a lengthy account of the story of prophet Musa (‫)عليه السالم‬, the most
common story in the Quran.
