MAT 243 Project Three Summary Report

Katie Letson

Southern New Hampshire University

, Notes:

1. Introduction
I am a data analyst for a basketball team, and I will be using a historical data base that I
have access to analyze performance patterns. Per the coach and my managements request I will
create a regression model that predicts the total number of wins for a team in the regular season
based on key performance metrics such as average points scored and average relative skill of
each team. I will also be analyzing scatterplots to locate a trend to be able to better visualize
the data.
The results of the statistical analysis will help the team’s coach and management to make
key decisions to improve the performance of the team. I will present the coach and team’s
management with a report containing the statistical analysis with a description of practical
analysis.

2. Data Preparation

The important variables used in this project are total_wins which is used to explain the
number of wins in a regular season. This will be the response variable. The next two variables
are predictor variables. They are avg_pts which describes the average points scored in a regular
season and avg_elo_n which represents the average relative skill of each team in a regular
season. Average relative skill is measured by using a rating that is created based upon the game’s
final score, game location, and which team wins the game. The higher the score for the rating
reflects how high the team’s relative skill is for the team.
The avg_pts_differential represents the average point differential between the team and
their opponents in a regular season. This is just taking an average of this team’s points scored in
a regular season and comparing it to the team they played against average points scored to find
how many points difference the team scored on an average. The avg_elo_differential is
representing average relative skill differential between the team and the opponent in a regular
season.
