As companies expand they must adapt and change their systems or they will fail.
After reading the scenario the organizational life cycle model would be the best
approach.The company has grown a lot very quickly and many of their systems are
obsolete. Changes must happen in order for the business to survive.
According to the organizational life cycle model each stage in the model usually
takes a few years and the company has existed for more than a decade and has gone
from 1 million to 100 million dollars of revenue. The company seems to have gone
through the first parts of expansion which are growth and creativity. Now it seems like
they have expanded so much that they need to adapt and redefine their leadership as
well as collaborate. The company must collaborate with their employees to come up with
new systems. The company is also in need of new equipment and they need to invest in
developing equipment to help them to keep the expansion and growth going.
It looks like this company is currently a traditional organization and it seems that
Information moves top-down with slow response times. The employees are not given
opportunities to make decisions and there is no reason or incentive to come up with
solutions. The company needs to become a learning organization in order to adapt. A
learning organization trains employees, they help employees come up with good ideas
and are open to ways for improvement.

B) 1) Woolner has 5 stages The Forming, The Developing, The Mature, The Adapting and
The Learning Organization. According to the scenario it would seem that this company is in the
3rd Stage The Mature Organization. The company has already formed and been growing
significantly. The scenario shows that the company is a a crucial point in which they need to
change in order to move forward. Stage 3 is when a company allows learning to become part of
their overall strategic plan.
2) Senge’s 5 disciplines are a)Building a Shared Vision b) Systems Thinking c) Mental
Models d) Team Learning and e) Personal Mastery
a) Building a Shared Vision is essential to building a successful learning company. This is
all about getting rid of the organizations vs individuals visions and creating an all
encompassing unified vision. This is done by figuring out what the individuals are
wanting out of their work in the company and what the company’s vision for its future is
and aligning these visions into a shared vision.
b) Systems thinking is all about seeing how all aspects of the company are connected and
that by changing any part of the process you inevitably change the whole process itself.
Therefore it is vital to address any changes in the scenario company by evaluating what
the goal of the company is and what they need to do to achieve that goal. For example
they have an antiquated inventory management system. They could buy a new one or
develop their own but if they don’t address how this change will affect employees and
