ABSTRACT

This report details an experiment that involved a setup designed to test the growth of the
boundary layer of air at low pressure flowing along a flat plate. The data collected was used
to obtain the velocity profiles for each point taken along the plate, which was used to give an
estimation of the points where flow regime changed from laminar to turbulent. Graphs of
non-dimensional thickness against non-dimensional velocity were drawn to obtain the
profiles, and boundary layer thickness against distance, x, along the plate to show the growth
of the boundary layer. From these graphs, the differences between the laminar and turbulent
velocity profiles together with the transitions between the regimes were discussed. Results
obtained were compared to theoretical values and the reasons for variations discussed.
