PADI Divemaster Course Chapter 2
Study Questions and Correct Answers
What is the role of the divemaster in dive planning for a group of certified divers?
✅You provide a broad planning that applies to the overall logistics and emergency
planning and preparation. The broad plan and briefing will be based on your evaluation
of conditions, what you know about the divers because of what they tell you, general
observations, log books and certifications levels.

How do you plan a dive by "thinking through a dive"? ✅Think through everything you
need to do and prepare, and consider the equipment, paperwork, etc.
From when you start preparing to when you've completed all post-dive maintenance and
have headed home.
Pre-dive preparation, divers arriving and checking in, day's activities, "what if?" and
reasonably likely, consider that the divers may want for their individual dive plans so you
can provide useful information and be prepared to support their goals.
Guides you by putting the information in context with for whom, how, when, and why it
may be useful.

How do you evaluate general dive conditions, and how do conditions affect them?
✅Your job is to advise divers of the conditions.
Consider dive conditions in your broad group planning and briefings so divers can
consider them in their individual plans. Helps divers plan their own dives if you tell them
your conclusions regarding diving in the conditions.

Weather: Prolonged wind can cause waves, surf, surge and currents. Wind can cause
cool water to displace warm water and vise-versa. Rain run-off causes visibility to drop.
Temperature may have immediate or long term effects, can affect comfort before and
after a dive (the greater the difference between the water and air temperatures, the
greater the pre/post dive discomfort because of the difference in thermal protection).
Upwelling brings deeper water to the surface which is much cooler.

Tides and Currents: Can affect visibility, temperature, choice of diving technique. Tides
are predictable (it's best to dive at slack tide). Strong tidal flow, timing dives with tides
may be important to avoid dealing with tidal currents and poorer visibility. If the currents
are too strong, drift diving may be the standard practice. Wind blowing shoreward can
cause a long shore current that runs parallel to the coast.

Visibility: Weather through rain run-off, wind and waves. Seasonal changes can cause
plankton blooms. Bottom composition and how easily a passing diver affects visibility by
stirring it up. Time of day affects how much light penetrates the water. Outgoing tides
carry debris.

, What are three aspects of planning dives for remote areas? ✅1. Planning to cover
more logistics-food, sleep arrangements, cylinder refills
2. Terms of emergencies- address having more substantial medical supplies and people
trained to use them, several hours worth of emergency oxygen
3. Terms of self sufficiency- "what ifs" having parts if engine fails, communication

What is the primary purpose of diver accounting procedure? ✅Make sure every diver
comes back aboard before the boat leaves, or that every diver returns to shore after the
dive.

In dive planning for a group of certified divers, the divemaster's role is usually to:
✅Provide broad planning information that divers use to plan their individual dives.

Divers must retain responsibility for: ✅*Planning dives within their own limits
*Following their individual plans
*Revising their plans if conditions change during the dive

"Thinking through the dive" is the process of thinking about a dive from before it starts
until after it ends, as a way of planning what you will need to prepare for and do.
✅True

Rain can affect dive conditions by causing current, temperature change and/or visibility
changes. ✅False, rain can cause visibility change but not typically current or
temperature change. WIND DOES THO

When planning dives for remote areas, planning must consider: ✅*More logistics such
as food, sleeping arrangements, cylinder fills
*Emergencies and not being within immediate reach of emergency assistance
*Self sufficiency and ability to deal with problems without help

The primary purpose of diving accounting procedures is to assure that every diver has:
✅Come back from the dive.

What individual differences in divers does a divemaster have to be prepared to
accommodate? ✅Skill level
Physical Challenges
Learning Challenges
Culture

What are six characteristics of responsible diver behavior? ✅1. Planning dives within
limits of training and experience for diver and buddy, and staying within those limits
during a dive.
2. Being properly equipped with all the dive gear generally accepted as required for a
dive.
3. Maintaining equipment properly and checking it before diving.
