LES MONTAGNARDSLes Montagnards furent sous la Révolution Française des membres du
groupe politique appelé « la Montagne ».
Le nom de leur groupe, vient du faite, qu’ils siégeaient sur les gradins,
les plus élevés de la Convention.
Au printemps 1793, le groupe a connu son apogée avec 300 députés
et parmi eu, leurs chefs, Marat, Danton et Robespierre. Ils furent
membres des clubs des Cordeliers ou encore des Jacobins. Ils furent
farouchement opposés à la monarchie et principalement favorable à
un régime centralisateur.
Durant leur députation, les Montagnards préconisèrent des mesures
sociales et eurent comme alliés les Sans-culottes.
Les Girondins, leurs principaux opposants furent éliminés les 31 mai et
2 juin 1793.
Totalement, maître de la France, les Montagnards menèrent sous la
Convention de Paris, une politique de Terreur, appelée « le Salut Public
».
