Values and Ethics Guiding Generalist Practice
Review the readings in Chapter 2, and the power point slides. In 250- 300 words, supporting
your comments with scholarly references, please summarize the professional values and ethics
that guide the Generalist Practice. Select one area of practice that stands out as an area of
particular strength for you and one which you want to strengthen in yourself, describing how you
might become more informed, aware or aligned with this principle. Respond to a minimum of

The Generalist Practice cannot exist in it’s intended scientific state if
professional values and ethics are not adhered to. If, as Applied Behavior
Science Specialists, we do not adhere to our defined professional standards
and the six core values of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
Code of Ethics (service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person,
importance of human relationships, integrity and competence) the results
obtained by following the generalist practice will be flawed. As challenging as
it is, we are bound by an ethical standard that asks us to constantly assess
our own conscious and unconscious stereotypes and biases. Without this
ongoing self-evaluation, we will become socially and culturally stagnant and
our ability to assess situations and dilemmas will be compromised. This
theory is detailed in the first of the four competencies that social workers are
to maintain, and summed up best as “An ongoing, endless process to
identify, clarify and evaluate your own values.” (Kirst-Ashman, 2011)
One of my strengths in regards to this is my ability to view every client
situation from a “clean slate” standpoint. Typically I will have read a
summary of a client before meeting with the client and the teacher.
However, I do my best to go into every data collection and evaluation
process with as little preconceived notion(s) as possible. This practice has
definitely served me well in that I believe the strategies I formulate with my
team members are based more concretely on Behavioral Science.
I would like to work on becoming more aware of the cultural differences in
my community. San Diego is a vast network of small mezzo systems whose
children all come together in the public school system. This makes for a
unique cultural experience but is indeed challenging from the Social
Worker’s standpoint. I spent the majority of my life in a California suburb
only to (now) find myself six blocks away from “Little Somalia” and three
blocks away from “Little Vietnam.” Indeed I have a great deal of learning to
do. However, I will continue to “strive to become aware of the lens through
which (I) view the world.” (Kirst-Ashman, 2011)
