A nanoparticle is a small particle that ranges in size between 1 to 100 nanometers.
Nanoparticles are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Most nanoparticles are made up of only
a few hundred atoms. Nanoparticles display chemical and physical properties that are different
compared to larger materials made out of nanoparticles (TWI, 2023). The properties of
nanoparticles change as they reach the atomic scale. This is because the surface area to volume
ratio increases, the surface area is larger than the ratio. Nanoparticles are small enough to prevent
their electrons from moving and producing quantum effects (TWI, 2023). Nanoparticles can be
generated in a particular way to play a specific role, this feature is the reason many industries use
nanoparticles for healthcare, makeup, preservation of environment etc (TWI, 2023).
Nanoparticles also have risks that may be prevented by following certain precautions. In this
paper, I will be outlining the benefits of nanoparticles, their risks as well as precautions to take
when dealing with nanoparticles to avoid these risks.
One great feature of nanoparticles is that they can be altered to achieve a specific purpose.
This feature has been used in many ways across many industries such as everyday materials and
processes, electronics and IT applications, healthcare and medical applications and more. Using
nanotechnology, materials can be made stronger, lighter, durable and more (NNI, 2023). Using
clear nanoscale films on eyeglasses, computer and camera displays, windows and other surfaces
makes the surface water repellent, gives the object the ability to clean itself without anyone else,
resistance to ultraviolet or infrared light and resistant to scratches. If nanoparticles are used in
vehicles, they can be made lightweight. This feature helps to save a lot of money on fuel (NNI,
2023). Adding nanoparticles to everyday objects such as motorcycles and their helmets, parts of
vehicles and airport baggage makes them weigh less, they are also not delicate and they last
longer. Materials that were made with nanoparticles make amazing household items such as stain
removers, air purifiers, cleansers that remove bacteria and more. In aerospace, carbon nanotubes
are used to make aircraft wings. The nanotubes are used in composite form so that the wings can
bend when they experience an electric voltage.
Nanotechnology has made a great impact in computers and electronics. This leads to
faster, smaller and more easy to carry systems that can take care of large amounts of information.
Some examples are making light switches smaller through the use of nanotechnology. A switch
used to be 130 to 250 nanometers in size, through the use of nanotechnology, switches have been
made 14, 7 and 1 nanometer in size (NNI, 2023). Another example that uses nanotechnology is
through the use of magnetic random access memory (MRAM), MRAM is turned on by
nanometer scale magnetic tunnel junctions. This allows computers to reload faster, quickly and
effectively save data when the computer accidentally shuts down. TV’s also make use of
quantum dots that are made of anotechnology to display more bright colors while being efficient
in energy (NNI, 2023). If nanotechnology is used, electronics can be stretched, bent and folded.
Nanotechnology can also be used for hearing aids, coatings on keyboard and cell phone casings
to prevent them from getting bacteria (NNI, 2023).
Another industry that uses nanotechnology is the medical and healthcare sector.
Nanotechnology is being used to give more medical tools and knowledge that are available to
doctors. Nanomedicine is the use of nanoparticles in medicine to produce correct solutions for
prevention of diseases, diagnosis and treatments (NNI, 2023). Gold nanoparticles are currently
being used for detection of certain sequences of nucleic acids. Gold particles are also being used
to find possible treatments for cancer and other diseases. Nanoparticles allow for better imaging
and diagnostic tools which helps diagnose patients early, provide custom treatment options and
