PA EFDA BASES AND LINERS
1. Bases and liners: May be used as sealers ,reinforcers insulators obtudents
and pulp stimulators
2. Sealers: Function to seal off the cavity preparation used in a thin layers also known as a
liner
3. Sealer: Known as a liner
4. Sealer: Seal off openings of the cut dentinal tubules and prevent chemical irritants from
reaching the pulp
5. Sealer: Seal off the microscopic space between the tooth surface and restoration while
reducing the leakage of fluid around the restoration
6. Sealer: Cannot provide thermal insulation because they are too thin
7. Cavity Varnishes: Are also known as sealers
8. cavity varnish: Composed of natural or synthetic residence dissolved in an organic
volatile solvent
9. Varnishes: Was placed under all amalgam restorations by many practitioners but it is not used

as commonly now
10. Varnish: Should not be used under resins as the solvent in the varnish may react with or
soften the resin and the monomer of the resin may dissolve in the varnish
11. Resin cements: Used as liners in preparation more commonly today then varnishes
12. Resin cements: Do not bond as well to deep Dentin as they do more superficial Dentin, they
can cause an inflammatory response from the pulp or tissues for these reasons they are not used
as the direct pulp capping agents
13. Copalite: Cavity varnish that is a sealer used under amalgam
14. Reinforcers: Are bases used to protect a pulp from the pressure exerted on it during
amalgam placement/condensation
15. Reinforcers: Can be an insulator and in reinforcer at the same time
16. Reinforcers: Can be any material that is placed in a relatively thick layer be- tween the
restorative material and the Dentin and may be referred as to a base regardless of the
purpose it serves
17. Insulators: Also referred to as bases and our place to insulate the pump from thermal
irritation
18. Zinc Oxide Eugenol (ZOE): Used as an insulating base and reinforcer this is a cement that
can be used as a base under amalgam restoration or as a temporary restoration
