The Scope of Practice for the SLPA - Answer addresses education, utilization, and
supervision of assistants in speech-language pathology-a title that ASHA created to be
appropriate for many different employment environments.



The Scope of Practice document does NOT-Answer pre-empt federal law and rule or
current state credentialing statute requirements, nor does it influence the interpretation
and/or execution of such statutes.



The Scope of Practice document may - Answer guide new law development or the
revision of licensure laws, where appropriate.



What an SLPA should complete includes: an approved course of academic study; a
supervised clinical experience; passing the ASHA Assistants Certification Exam
successfully; showing credentialing requirements of a state in which they are
practicing; receiving orientation as well as on-the-job training of SLPA responsibilities
regarding particular settings.



Three Educational Options - Answer 1. Completion of an SLPA program from a
regionally accredited institution (e.g., an associate degree, a technical training
program, a certificate program).

OR

2. Receipt of a bachelor's degree in communication sciences and disorders from a
regionally accredited institution AND completion of ASHA education modules.

OR

3. Master's or doctoral degree in an area outside of communication sciences and
disorders AND ASHA education modules completed AND course work from a regionally
or nationally accredited institution in each of the following areas:

overview or introduction class to the field of communication disorders

,phonetics

speech sound disorders

language development

language disorders

anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms



IN ADDITION TO having satisfied one of the three education options, the SLPA shall also
meet all of the following three requirements: - Answer 1. Completion of supervised
clinical experience that consists of a minimum of one hundred (100) hours under the
direct supervision of an ASHA certified SLP. The supervising SLP must meet all ASHA
certification and supervising requirements and state credentialing requirements.

2. The ASHA Assistants Certification Examination must be passed

3. All requirements of state credentialing must be completed.

Responsibilities/Performance Expectations It is expected that an ASHA-certified SLPA
will have the responsibilities listed below: - Answer - Uphold all relevant state laws and
regulations that mean a lot to the practice of speech-language pathology.

Uphold the responsibilities for SLPAs as in this scope of practice document and all state
requirements.

- Not perform activities or services specifically designated by the state as the
responsibility of the SLP

- Perform only those activities that have been approved by the supervising SLP

- Perform work activity only in work settings for which the SLPA has received training
and in which the SLPA's employment is allowed by state regulations.

-Provide services only when an ASHA-certified SLP with state licensure provides direct
and indirect supervision on a regular and systematic basis. The frequency and type of
supervision should be based on the competencies and caseload need as determined by
the supervising SLP.

- Act in an ethical manner according to the ASHA Assistant's Code of Conduct and state
ethical codes.

- Self-advocate for needed supervision while communicating and collaborating with
students, patients, clients, the supervising SLP, colleagues, families, caregivers and
other stakeholders.

- Demonstrate initiative to participate in continuing education and professional

, development activities.

- Seek information regarding availability and need for liability insurance.



The supervising SLP maintains - Assumes full legal and ethical responsibility for
students, patients and clients served but may delegate specific tasks to the SLPA.



Services provided by the SLPA are - Respond only to those that are within scope of
practice and are activities for which the SLPA has been trained and competent to
perform, as confirmed by the supervising SLP.



Under NO condition should the utilization of an SLPA's services - Response (a) violate
the ASHA Code of Ethics or the ASHA Assistants Code of Conduct or

(b) adversely affect the quality of services.

experience of SLPA



An SLPA's services are designed to -Answer complement the quality of care provided by
the SLP.



If the SLPA has demonstrated the competencies and the supervising SLP provides the
appropriate amount and type of supervision, the SLPA may participate in or be

cultural responsive practices

responsibilities for all practitioners

responsibilities for practitioners who use multiple languages

administration and support

prevention and advocacy
