Overall expectation 1:
1) Balance the following chemical reactions
2Mg + O₂ —> 2MgO
3Cu₂O + 2H₃PO₄ —> 2Cu₃PO₄ + 3H₂O
3(NH₄)₂S + 2CoCl₃ —> 1Co₂S₃ + 6NH₄Cl

2) Identify each of the following reactions as synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, or
double displacement.
Aluminum bromide + chlorine → aluminum chloride + bromine Single displacement
Beryllium carbonate → beryllium oxide + carbon dioxide Decomposition
Aluminum + chlorine → aluminum chloride Synthesis
Ammonium chloride + mercury(I) acetate → ammonium acetate + mercury(I) chloride Double
displacement

3) Complete the following neutralization reactions. Word equations should be completed as word
equations, and chemical equations should be completed as balanced chemical reactions.
Sulphuric acid + lithium hydroxide —-> lithium sulfate + water
2KOH + H₂SO₄ —-> K₂SO₄ + 2H₂O

4) For one of the fuels in gasoline, pentane (C₅H₁₂), complete the following combustion
reactions. Make certain your equations are balanced.
Complete combustion: 2C₅H₁₂ + 11O₂→ 5CO₂ + 12H₂O
Incomplete combustion: C₅H₁₂ + 5.5O₂ → 5CO₂ + 6 H₂O
Overall expectation 2:
5) For each of the following chemical reactions, identify the type of reaction based on the
reactants present. Write chemical formulas for the expected products and state one qualitative
observation that an observer would expect to see. (In all cases, a reaction will occur. There is no
need to balance these chemical reactions.)
Li +O₂:
Type of reaction: Synthesis
Product: Li2O
Observation: Lithium burning with a bright red flame while reacting with oxygen, this quality
will eventually turn into a white solid
Fe+Cu(NO₃)₂:
Type of reaction: Single displacement
Product: Fe(NO₃)₂+Cu
Observation: Final product should be blue crystals, Copper should turn green due to exposure of
moist air
NaCl:
Type of reaction: Decomposition
Product: Na + Cl
Observation: The ions of sodium and chlorine should separate. There should be a change in
color.
CH₄ + O₂:
Type of reaction: Combustion
Product: CO₂+2H₂O+energy
Observation: CH₄ + O₂ has a blue flame when it is burned in the air. There should also be a
burning smell.

6) Use both the metal and the halogen activity series to predict whether each of the following

, reactions will occur. Write the formulas for the products and balance the equation, if the reaction
does take place.
AgNO₃+ Zn:
Since zinc is higher on the metal activity series than silver, zinc will displace silver from the
compound and cause a single displacement. Therefore the new product will be: 2AgNO₃ + Zn
—> Zn(NO₃)₂ + 2Ag
Cl₂+Nal:
Since chlorine is higher than iodine in the halogen activity series, chlorine will displace
iodine from the compound and cause a single displacement. Therefore the new product will
be NaCl + I₂
Fe+Al₂O₃:
Aluminum is higher than iron in the metal activity series and iron is already out of the
compound so no reaction will take place.

Overall expectation 3:
7) Many iron-containing alloy parts, such as ductwork in your home, mufflers on your vehicle,
and hardware used in construction, are galvanized (coated with zinc). What is the purpose of
galvanizing these parts? Explain your answer to part a, using the activity series. One or two
sentences will suffice. The purpose of galvanizing is to prevent iron objects from reacting with
water/moisture which causes rusting and makes the product last very less. . Zinc is higher than
iron on the metal activity series this means that zinc is more reactive than iron. Since it is more
reactive, it can undergo reactions better than iron can. This will prevent water and moisture from
reaching iron and prevent rusting, and when both metals can corrode, zinc will react with oxygen
faster than iron so it provides good protection for iron which keeps it from rusting.

8) In Ontario, some electricity comes from coal-burning generators. Coal is a natural form of
carbon that has a large amount of sulfur mixed in with it. Here are the balanced equations for the
combustion of coal and sulfur. Answer the following questions based on the burning of coal to
produce energy: In what way is the combustion of sulfur harmful to the environment? SO₂ is a
very acidic oxide which produces sulfurous, and eventually sulphuric acid when mixed with
water. SO₂ gas has a very unpleasant smell, induces choking and coughing and causes the eyes to
sting severely. The gas dissolves in the water in the throat, lungs, and eyes and produces acids
that cause discomfort. Write the word equation and balanced chemical equation for the reaction
that produces this harmful environmental effect. SO₂ + H₂O → H₂SO₃ → H₂SO₄ or Sulfur
dioxide & water to sulfurous acid to sulphuric acid.

9) Furnaces in residential homes usually burn natural gas, which is mostly methane, CH₄. Here is
the balanced equation for the complete combustion of methane: CH₄+ 2O₂ → CO₂+ 2H₂O a.
Explain why it is important to make sure your furnace is serviced and in proper working order
before the winter. Be sure to include information about combustion reactions in your answer. The
main reason the furnace should be serviced and in working order before the winter is to make
sure it works properly as the furnace is the main source of heat in the winter and the furnace not
being serviced may lead to problems during the winter time such as feeling cold. Another reason
to make sure the furnace if serviced properly is to avoid incomplete combustion, during
incomplete combustion During complete combustion, all the carbon in the fuel is converted to
carbon dioxide and all the hydrogen is converted to water. This occurs when adequate oxygen is
available. It is possible, however, for a combustion reaction to be incomplete, when the reaction
is starved of oxygen. Another problem with incomplete combustion is the product carbon
monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is
produced in some amount when a fuel burns: the larger the fuel molecule, the more carbon
