Short answer questions:
1) Match the following eight angiosperm structures to their functions. Calyx: D, Sepal: H,
Carpel: G, Ovule: F, Seed: B, Stamen:A, Anther: E, Corolla: C

2) List three factors that are contributing to the decline of pollinator populations. Pathogens,
pesticides, invasive species and parasites.

3) From an agricultural perspective, describe two advantages of vegetative propagation. Flowers
that are reproduced this way have the same quality as normal flowers and since part of the plant
is being cut the fruit can still be grown.

4) For a plant colonizing a remote island, describe one advantage and one disadvantage for each
of the following methods: self-pollination and cross-pollination.
Self pollination:
Advantage - Plants do not depend on external factors for pollination.
Disadvantage - Since no new animals are presented to the plants during self pollination, the
plant will not be immune to diseases and will die quicker.
Cross pollination:
Advantage - Since bees are repeatedly coming to plants for nectar, seeds are repeatedly being
attached to bees and will produce many plants.
Disadvantage - It takes a lot of time for a nectar flower to grow which makes it longer to attract
insects.

5) Three factors that affect plant growth are soil health, nitrogen fixation, and sunlight. Explain
how each factor works to affect the growth of plants. Soil absorbs nutrients from decomposers
nearby and provides a solid foundation for a plant to grow. If the soil is unhealthy, it will not be
able to carry out its functions. Nitrogen fixation helps in plant growth by converting nitrogen
from the atmosphere into forms which plants can absorb and make/get food, if plants do not get
food they will die. Sunlight affects plants' growth by giving them the only source of energy they
need to convert carbon dioxide and oxygen into carbohydrates and oxygen.

6) The following experiment was carried out at ILC laboratories to measure the effects of
different nutrient solutions on bean root growth. Three nutrient solutions were made. Explain
how the solution ranked in relation to the other two (in terms of growth and health of the plant),
state the evidence that supports your answer; and explain why the plant grew the way it did.
Solution 1 turned out to be the best from the other 3, it had the natural color of leaves however it
was very dark which indicates a very high amount of nitrogen. If a plant has a very high amount
of nitrogen it is predicted to get disease and not survive a drought. Since solution 1 got all the
required nutrients, it turned out to be the best in height. Solution 2 turned out worse than solution
1 but better than solution 3, it got every nutrient except nitrogen which is the main and most
essential nutrient in a plant and solution 2 will not be able to carry out its daily functions.
Nitrogen not being given to the plant gave it chlorosis, it stunted the growth and nitrogen
deficient plants have poor fruit development. Solution 3 turned out to be the worst from the other
