SOC 156 HW Assignment 1
Who were the authors and their readings? - correct answer Omi and Winant's
(2015) "Racial Formation in the United States" and Cornell and Hartmann (1998), "Ethnicity and Race"

Why and how did slavery in the U.S. destroy the ethnic identities of African peoples and replace them
with an overarching racial identity? (Cornell and Hartmann) - correct answer African
Americans were forcefully taken from their countries and brought to the U.S. where they were
categorized as "black" which ended up creating a more monotonized group despite their cultural
differences amongst each other. Slavery was also an extremely dominating force of power which denies
the slave authority over themselves and within society. Slavery also was dehumanizing and reduced
Africans to a commodity. They were sold individually which meant that oftentimes there was less of a
collective group mixture, this isolation of individuals also destroys identity.

What role did blacks play in developing a common racial identity and community during slavery and its
aftermath?(Cornell and Hartmann) - correct answer Slavery made it challenging for
black people to maintain their identity and community. However, their resilience persisted and they did
so through music, songs, language, storytelling, and religion. In the aftermath of slavery, political
organization also helped to unite the community especially against backlash from white supremacy and
racist groups. The Civil Rights movement was also significant in rebelling against the racial hierarchy
within the country although it did not solve the issue discrimination it did open up more opportunities
for black people.

How, and to what extent, did whites' subordination of Native American peoples change their identities?
How did this differ from the construction of black identity? (Cornell and Hartmann) - correct answer
Natives initially, were exploited by colonizers for their labor however, this did not last long because
many of them were dying due to the diseases that colonizers spread. Since they were not fit for labor,
colonizers began looking to them for trade such as for fur and pelts. As the fur trade slowly diminished,
colonizers were now interested in land. Reservations forcefully removed natives from their homeland to
less desirable lands, however, they were confined to spaces that were solely their community which
allowed them to somewhat maintain identity. What about boarding schools? The readings make no
reference to boarding schools and their major impact on native assimilation?

What role did Native American peoples play in maintaining or transforming their tribal and racial
identities? (Cornell and Hartmann) - correct answer In the 1950s and 1960s native
began moving to cities also known as "urban natives" which established multi tribal communities in
