Introduction
There are 3 different categories of data that are collected in science, nominal data, ordinal
data, and interval-ratio data . Nominal data is data collected from two unrelated independent
variables. This is not a very reliable source of data because it only shows the differences between
the categories and you are unable to make a prediction about a third category. Nominal data is
shown on a bar graph. Ordinal data is collected from independent variables that are related but
not in a measurable way. This type of data is better than nominal because you are able to make
simple predictions from them but without a lot of precision. Ordinal data is shown on a line
graph. The last type of data is interval-ratio data, which is the most commonly used data by
, scientists, it is independent variables for which there are direct measures that are proportional
against a consistent scale. It is shown on a scatterplot graph and often with a line of best fit or
trend bar.
