Question What is the connection between an emotionally abusive parent-child
The question after relationship and social anxiety when the child becomes an adult?

by a brief explanation According to Leonard Holmes (2024), experiencing emotional abuse during
(150 words) childhood can result in permanent changes to the developing human brain.
IF…THEN These changes in the brain structure may potentially cause emotional and
psychological issues in adulthood such as psychological disorders. Just as
emotional maltreatment in childhood can permanently affect the brain
structure, it can also permanently affect the way the child behaves, regulates
emotions, and functions socially. One of the potential long-term impacts on
the emotionally abused child’s mental health could be that they may be
nervous and alert most of the time, and they may find social situations rather
challenging. If these issues are not addressed during their childhood, they
can develop bigger issues in adulthood; issues such as a social anxiety
disorder. This explains why there is a connection between an emotionally
abusive parent-child relationship and social anxiety in the child’s adulthood.

Discipline Because this study fits into both the sociology and psychology categories,
Identify the discipline both disciplines of study are beneficial to this research. The study of human

study and explain the provide a deeper understanding of the impact an emotionally abusive
reasoning (250 words) parent-child relationship has on the child’s behavior in adulthood.
On the other hand, the study of mental processes and human behavior is
known as psychology. When studying the effects of an emotionally abusive
parent-child relationship, psychology provides an understanding of the
emotional scars that this experience can leave behind in the child’s mind,
and how that can affect the child’s life when they reach adulthood. When
children get emotionally abused by their own parents, they might experience
feelings of neglect, isolation, shame, and anxiety, which can eventually grow
into mental disorders such as depression and/or social anxiety. In
psychology, it is explained that children living in high-conflict families are
likely to develop social anxiety (Psychology Today, 2021).
I believe that combining sociology and psychology provides a
comprehensive framework for this research. Sociology explains how
emotional abuse from parents impacts the social behavior of their child, as
well as how culture can influence the way parents treat their children.
Meanwhile, psychology offers a closer look at how the child’s brain structure
and behavior changes, and how it can eventually lead to long-term mental

, health issues.
This is why I think that sociology and psychology are helpful disciplines in
this research.

uneasy emotions in the interviewees that they may have previously been
unaware of; I will ensure that I stay sensitive to the interviewees’ reactions
when sharing their experiences on the topic, and in case they find it difficult
to handle their emotions, I will take action and interrupt the interview to
ensure their emotional wellbeing. In case any of the volunteers in the study
feel any sort of discomfort, they will be granted the right to withdraw from the
research at any time. Most importantly, in preparation for the study, I will
make sure to brief people on the purpose of the research, so that they know
what they will be participating in before volunteering.

the importance of the topic that will be talked about. There will be contact
information on the posters so that the students can reach out if they are
interested, and once they do, they will have the option of either answering
questions through surveys or to have a one-on-one interview.
The questions on the surveys/interviews will be slightly different for the high
school students compared to the university students.

Given how difficult and distressing it would be to conduct an experiment on
people to get a response for this question, I think interviews and surveys are
the most sensible methods to use. This way if the questions or the topic are
upsetting for the target people, they can withdraw from the interview, and
most importantly, they will not be at risk of emotional or physical harm.
