Democracy of Athens.

- The men that were born in Athens that were older then 18 could vote. Not women, slaves and
men that weren’t born in Athens. Now this is bad, but in history this was really special and a
good start.
- Athens was a democracy because: People could vote, and were a kind of the ruler.
- Athens was not a democracy because: Only men could vote, and not women.
- In Athens there was a ostracism, that is that you can vote someone out (only men). Then he
can’t become a king and destroy democracy.

Difference between philosophy and science:

- Philosophy is thinking about life: What is good? What can we really know?
- Science is about gathering knowledge, what happens when you do this?

Why did Sparta kill some babies?

Because the council of elders then thought the baby wasn’t strong enough. And a baby had to be strong
to later fight in the army and be strong mothers.

The war between Persia and the Greeks

- The Persian king planned to add the Greek colonies on the Turkish coast to his kingdom. The
poleis in Turkey, received support from Athens.
o It became a war.
- The Persian army was ruled strictly by one king. On the one side there were the small land
armies of the Greek poleis with soldiers who were their own citizens.
- After a long war the Greeks defeated the Persians.
- After the war King Philip, he could easily conquer the Greek poleis and build a very large army,
because the Greeks where still weak after the war with Persia.
o The son of King Philip, Alexander the Great could easily start a war with the large army.
He also did, he conquered Egypt and many other regions, even as far as India.
