o The army was well-armed, well-trained and well-organized.
The soldiers also wanted to fight for their city.
- The soldiers who lost of the Roman army, fight after the war in the Roman army. The Roman army grew even
more of that.
o The defeated soldiers could keep their religion. This is how the Greek and Roman religions became one.
3.3 Life in the Roman Empire
Life in the countryside.
- Most people in the Roman Empire lived in the countryside.
o Many farmers had their own land on which they could grow fruit and grain.
o They were peasant farmers and formed an important social class in Roman society.
But this group became smaller and smaller because many farmers started to fight in the army.
Many slaves were prisoners of war from conquered regions.
Life in the city.
- In the first two centuries BC, Roman cities grew very fast due to the arrival of farmers.
o These farmers had no possessions left, except their children. Hence they were called proletarians.
o These people offered their services as builders. They were dependent on the wealthiest and most
powerful citizen the nobiles. The nobiles were members of the senate they led the army and owned
much land in the countryside.
