Race Relations in the 19th-Century US Context After the Abolition of Slavery
The abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865 was a significant milestone in the
long and tumultuous history of race relations. However, this legal change did not signal
the end of inequality between black and white people. In fact, racial disparities
continued to manifest in social, economic, political, and legal systems throughout the
19th century and beyond. These inequalities were rooted in the legacies of slavery and
perpetuated by systemic racism, legal structures, and the economic exploitation of
African Americans. As well as the reasons for these unequal relations after the abolition
of slavery, focusing on the persistence of economic, political, and legal discrimination,
as well as social segregation.
