Water Circuits in Nuclear Reactors
Water is used as a coolant and moderator in nuclear
reactors
Two main coolant loops:
Primary loop: water is pumped through the
reactor core where it absorbs heat from the
nuclear fuel
Secondary loop: heat from the primary loop is
transferred to the secondary loop, producing
steam which drives the turbines
Pressurized Water Reactors (PWRs) are the most
common type of nuclear reactor and use water as
both the coolant and moderator in the primary loop
The water in the primary loop is kept under high
pressure to prevent it from boiling, which would
decrease its ability to absorb heat
Heat transfer from the primary loop to the
secondary loop occurs in a heat exchanger, which
separates the two loops and prevents radioactive
materials from escaping
The steam generated in the secondary loop drives
the turbines, which spin the generator to produce
electricity
After passing through the turbines, the steam is
condensed back into water using cooling towers and
then pumped back into the secondary loop
