SWR-5 Dynamic Routing (N10-008) Summaries

1. Dynamic Routing
-Performs a listening process where it determines what other
Protocols
routers are close by
-It builds a table within the router and sends its own adver-
tisement to those nearby routers
-These advertisements allows routers to work together to build
a series of routing tables
-Those routing tables are used by the router to determine where
traffic should be forwarded

-There are many different dynamic routing protocols and each
protocol has its own way to determine the best path based on
the gathered information

-Another important task of these routing protocols is to work
around any outages
-If a route becomes unavailable, the router performs a
convergence process where it recompiles the routing table to
work around this particular outage

2. Which routing -Depends on the criteria of the route
protocol to use? -Is it based on the state of the link? Whether the link if up or
down
-Is it based on how far that particular connection might be?
-Is distance something relating to the number of hops between
one point and another or is it related to the speed of the
communication between those connections

-Another important consideration is how the routing proto- col
determines what the best path might be
-This maybe be determined based on a certain set of criteria to
create a metric
-This metric ranks the routes from best to worst and send the
data through the best type of connection

, SWR-5 Dynamic Routing (N10-008) Summaries

-Some routing protocols are very good at convergence
-They can very quickly recognize the outage and redefine the
routing tables to work around that outage
-Other routing protocols may take longer to determine the
route is no longer available and the convergence process may
be lengthy

-OSPF and RIP are standards that many devices can use
-Some functions of EIGRP are Cisco proprietary

3. Distance-vector -Routing protocols that determine what the best route might be
routing protocol based on how far that particular connection is
-The information between the routers is able to determine how
many hops another network might be
-If a connection has a shorter distance (small number of hops),
then that is the route that will be used to send traffic

-The process for configuring this routing protocol is rela- tively
simple
-On most routers, you enable the protocol and the protocol takes
it from there

-A good protocol to use for smaller networks
-It doesn't tend to scale very well when you have 100's or
1000's of routers that need to be managed

-Good examples of this type of routing protocol
-RIP (Routing Information Protocol)
-EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol)
