Chapter 13: Burn Injuries (PHTLS)
Dermis - ANS The layer of skin just under the epidermis made up of a framework of connective
tissues containing blood vessels, nerve endings, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands

Epidermis - ANS The outermost layer of the skin, which is made up entirely of dead epithelial
cells with no blood vessels

Zone of coagulation - ANS The region of greatest tissue destruction in a full-thickness burn; the
tissue in this zone is necrotic (dead) and is not capable of tissue repair

Zone of stasis - ANS The region next to the zone of coagulation; blood flow to this region is
stagnant, and the cells in this zone are injured, but not irreversibly. If they are subsequently
deprived of the delivery of oxygen or blood flow, these viable cells will die and become necrotic.
Timely and appropriate burn care will preserve blood flow and oxygen delivery to these injured
cells.

Zone of hyperemia - ANS The outermost zone in a full-thickness burn; it has minimal cellular
injury and is characterized by increased blood flow secondary to an inflammatory reaction
initiated by the burn injury.

Partial thickness burn - ANS A burn that involves both the epidermis and the dermis. Skin
presents with reddened areas, blisters, or open, weeping, wounds.

Full thickness burn - ANS A burn to the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (possibly
deeper). Skin may look charred or leathery.

Debridement - ANS The removal, usually surgically, of dead or damaged tissue

Eschar - ANS Thick scab of dead tissue, often resulting from a burn

Superficial burn - ANS A burn to the epidermis only; red, inflamed, and painful skin

Denuded - ANS Having the covering or surface layer removed

Subdermal burn - ANS A burn injury that involves all layers of the skin, as well as the
underlying fat, muscles, bone, or internal organs

Devitalized - ANS Lifeless or dead
