Instructional and curricular decisions in the classroom should be made based

on data collected through various types of assessment. Formative assessments are

one of the most common ways to evaluate student knowledge and enable the

teacher to make modifications and adjustments as needed to meet the needs of the

students in her instructional setting. In this essay I will evaluate the use of

formative assessments in an 8th grade science classroom that contains 30 students,

16 male students and 14 female students. Seventeen students are performing at

grade level, seven above grade level, and six below grade level. The lesson

presented takes place in the school’s “Media Center” to allow access to computers

for a portion of the lesson. This class includes students identified as English

Language Learners, for which differentiation is noted.

One student has an identification of Autism and has an Individualized Education

Plan as well as some other students.

Formative Assessment Data

Formative assessments are taken during instruction and enable the teacher

to evaluate the student’s understanding of the concept and their progression

toward mastery of the lesson objectives. The teacher can make the needed changes

based on the formative assessment data, and in turn better meet the needs of the
