Unit 5 Learning Aim C: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs
Emily Pride
Explain the strategies and communication techniques used with individuals different needs to
overcome different challenges.

Task One- C.P4

Awareness and Knowledge

Awareness and Knowledge challenges are challenges that happen when an individual, such as an
elderly person, is unaware of situations that involve her care. For example, funding help that is
available to them. This could benefit Aisha as her neighbour thinks that she is not safe living at home
and is unable to live independently. So, she would need to be moved to a care home where she can
be safely observed, she may be unaware of any funding she may get to support her moving into a
care home. Similarly, healthcare professionals can be unaware of the latest guidance, resulting in
some individuals not benefitting from the specific guidance.

Practical Challenges

Practical challenges are challenges that individuals may face because they are less mobile, such as
cooking meals and maintaining personal hygiene. Healthcare professionals can offer resources and
care to support the individuals and make their lives as easy as possible. Practical challenges can be
overcome with Aisha by setting up and preparing meals for her, this will ensure that the stress of
cooking and ensuring there is food in the house is reduced. Tremayne also suffers from practical
challenges as he may find it difficult to complete day to day tasks such as washing, as because of his
broken leg. The healthcare professionals can work with his carer to put support plans in place, so
that he has support when washing and maintaining personal hygiene.

Skills Challenges

Skills challenges are challenges that an individual may face because they do not have the relevant
skills to carry out tasks, such as finding online information. Health care professionals can help
overcome these issues by getting into touch with local organisations that hep with learning new
skills, such as technological skills.

Acceptance and Belief Challenges

Acceptance Challenges are challenges where an individual faces a change in their life that they are
struggling to accept and come to terms with. The health care professionals can offer guidance on
how to accept the changes and how to adapt to them. Tremayne may face an acceptance challenge,
as he has recently broken his leg in three places, this will increase his loss in mobility. This will result
in a change of routine for Tremayne, which could impact him negatively further, as he suffers with
autism, so he will not react well with the change in routine. Belief Challenges are challenges where
comfort is found in religion. Aisha may benefit from her religion as she starts to reach the end of her
life. This is because she is a Buddhist, she may believe that she will be reincarnated and go on and
live a new and different life. This benefits healthcare services as beliefs such as Buddhism can make
it easier for individuals to become comfortable and at peace during their end-of-life stage of care.

Motivational Challenges

Motivational Challenges are challenges where the individual struggles to find the motivation to carry
out simple day to day tasks. Health care professionals can also struggle with this challenge as they

,could not be pushing to work to achieve a desired goal. For example, motivation to learn new
techniques to have a better care plan for a patient. Aisha could struggle with motivational challenges
as she is getting older and has health issues such as vascular dementia, this can stop her from
completing her daily tasks. Health care professionals will have to support her with tasks she feels
that she cannot complete herself. Tremayne may also suffer with motivational challenges as he now
has mobility issues. This could make daily tasks more difficult for him, resulting in a loss of
motivation. He should speak with a health care professional and his carers to ensure support will be
put in place for him.

Communication Challenges

Communication Challenges are challenges when an individual finds it difficult to communicate and
express their feelings towards a health care professional. This can be because of the individual could
have a hearing or a sight impairment or could be due to a disability, learning difficulty or a language
barrier. Tremayne may suffer from communication challenges due to him being autistic, he may not
understand the tone of voice well. Health care professionals have to work carefully when talking to
Tremayne, as it could cause him to have a lack of empowerment and he may feel less likely to
communicate if he feels misunderstood.

Task Two- C.P4

Observation

Observation will help people identify problems quickly, so they can be addressed before they
progress and get any worse. By observing patterns of behaviour to see if there are any changes could
point to a developing a larger issue that needs attention. These skills can help identify signs of abuse
and neglect and can also help overcome them. Aisha could benefit from observation, as she has to
be observed for her pneumonia and this could get worse if she doesn’t improve or respond well with
her treatment. This will allow health care professionals to change her medication that will suit her
best for her own specific needs.

Focus Groups

A focus group is group of around 8 people that are invited to discuss specific topics and issues. The
group shares ideas and gathers information with each other to then clarify and identify any
challenges. Health care professionals can then provide the correct services needed to meet the
challenge. A focus group could benefit Tremayne, as it can allow health care professionals to discuss
what they can do further to improve and support those with autism. This could be by meeting his
sensory needs by having quiet areas in the hospital with dimmed lights. This could reduce his
disruptive behaviour and will improve any outburst Tremayne has whilst he is in hospital.

Talking to individuals informally

Talking to service users informally without using technical words or jargon that some individuals may
not understand can help to identify any challenges that an individual is facing, without them feeling
like they are being questioned. This can help the individual feel more comfortable around the health
care professionals and help them open up about their problems and feelings. This can also be used
to gather opinions on ideas such as introducing a new procedure or opening a new ward. Aisha can
benefit from talking informally, as it can allow her to understand her conditions better such as her
vascular dementia. It can help her understand the treatment she is being given and let her give any
questions she has about it. It can also give the health care professionals feedback about her care so
they can get her opinion on what they can do to improve with her care further.

, The Use of Questionnaires

A questionnaire is a set of questions used to collect the views of a large number of people on specific
topics. The use of questionnaires allows individuals to be more honest rather than doing it face to
face where they may be hesitant to answer any questions honestly. When the results are in, health
care professionals can view them and decide whether they need to change their methods to give
each individual the best support for their care needs. Tremayne could benefit from questionnaires,
as the questions are simple, clear and easy to understand and do not involve writing long answers.
This makes it easier for him as due to his autism he may find it difficult to get his words out and he
may struggle under pressure. An advantage of questionnaires is that is quicker than any other
methods, so this could benefit Tremayne as he may lose his temper and get frustrated and bored.

Task Three – C.P4

Educational Information Materials

Educational informational materials come in a range of forms such as leaflets, posters, web-based
materials and books. Their purpose is to educate those who read them. They can raise awareness
and provide information to many individuals. Educational informational materials can help overcome
challenges by giving advice on how to live healthily, such as those with obesity issues and who has a
smoking addiction. Educational materials can benefit both Tremayne and Aisha, as they could both
feel empowered when they have information on their conditions to help them understand it better
too. These materials can help Tremayne become more educated about his autism. This can lead to
reduced temper outburst, as those around him will have a better understanding on how to deal with
his issues appropriately.

Training Courses

Training Courses are available to help individuals with care and support needs to overcome
challenges. These courses are provided by local councils and hospitals and also online courses are
available, making them very highly functional and accessible. The courses can cover a wide range of
issues which help overcome these challenges with training. Training courses can be beneficial to
Tremayne, as due to his autism he doesn’t understand why he keeps falling ill due to his wheat
allergy and lives on pizza. He also struggles to control his emotions. By completing a training course,
Tremayne will have a better understanding on his condition, it could make day to day life and daily
tasks easier for him.

Opinion Leaders

An opinion leader is a well-known person or organisation who has the ability to influence people’s
opinion. They usually are anyone who has an active voice and speaks out for the community, which
the public can approach them for advice. They work with health care providers to give motivation to
them to give each patient support and care best suited for them. This can benefit both Tremayne
and Aisha, healthcare professionals make sure they perform the best of their abilities to get the best
high standard of care. This can benefit Aisha and Tremayne as both individuals can make a fast
recovery than usual as all attention is on them.

Clinical Audits

A clinical audit is a systematic way of reviewing healthcare to ensure it is being provided to a high
standard. It also ensures that health care professionals are being informed about whether their
service is doing well and what improvements need making. Clinical audits help highlight challenges
for both service users and providers, which are then reviewed and worked on to overcome the
