THOMAS AND REALITY THERAPY APPROACH 2

Case Study Report: Thomas and Reality Therapy Approach

Issue and Approach

Thomas is a fifteen-year-old male that is showing a lack of self-confidence and apparent

understanding of his requirements. Thomas was caught shoplifting and is not able to offer rea-

sons to his father and mother for his motive for stealing. He merely did it; however, now recog-

nizes it was not a good decision. The emphasis will address Thomas’s need for power and further

assist Thomas in making good and deliberate decisions. The selected strategy in dealing with

Thomas will be Reality Therapy. This technique will help Thomas in realizing his desire for

power as well as to assist him in bringing better control and confidence into his life.

Therapeutic Approach,

Chosen therapy and applicability. Reality Therapy was invented by a person known as

William Glasser and further enhanced by Robert Wubbolding. Reality Therapy focuses on key

elements of human existence and environment (Gladding & Alderson, 2012). Consciousness is

noted in Reality Therapy's perspective. This treatment outlines two human nature concepts: intu-

itions or unconscious forces don't drive people and people have a growth or health force (Miller,

1980) that emerges on two different levels: psychological and physical. Meanwhile, Glasser

identifies four psychological wants that relate to behaviour: power (need for self-esteem, recog-

nition, and competitiveness), love and belonging (need for friends and family), enjoyment (the

need for play, laughter, and recreation) and freedom (need to make decisions). The demand for

identification is addressed by people accepting you as you are.
