Psychology- Chapter 4:
Psychopharmacology Questions With
Answers.
affinity - ANSWER- drugs vary widely in their affinity for the molecules to which they
attach-the readiness with which the two molecules join together
a drug with a high affinity will produce effects at a relatively low concentration, whereas
one with a low affinity must be administered in relatively high doses
thus, even two drugs with the same site of action can vary widely in their effectiveness if
they have different affinities for their binding sites

antagonist - ANSWER- drugs that block or inhibit the postsynaptic effects
If normally EPSP, antagonist decreases excitatory effect
If normally IPSP, antagonist decreases inhibitory effect

agonist - ANSWER- those that facilitate the postsynaptic effects
If normally EPSP, agonist enhances excitatory effect
In normally IPSP, agonist enhances inhibitory effect

direct agonist - ANSWER- a drug that mimics the effects of a neurotransmitter
molecules of the drug attach to the binding site to which the neurotransmitter normally
attaches
this causes ion channels controlled by the receptor to open, just as they do when the
neurotransmitter is present
ions then pass through these channels and produce postsynatic potentials

dose response curve - ANSWER- the best way to measure the effectiveness of a drug
subjects are given various doses of a drug and the effects are plotted
there is a point of maximum where more of a drug won't produce any more effect

drug effect - ANSWER- changes we can observe in physiological processes of behavior

intracerebral administration - ANSWER- given directly to the brain
but the blood-brain barrier prevents certain chemicals from leaving capillaries and
entering the brain
put a very small amount into the brain

inhalation - ANSWER- route from lungs to brain is fairly short so have rapid effects

indirect antagonist - ANSWER- a drug that attaches to a binding site on a receptor and
interferes with the action of the receptor; does not interfere with the binding site for the
principal ligand
