Organisational Structures, Aims and Objectives, Functional Areas of my two
contrasting organisations.
Introduction
In this essay I will be going through the structure of the two private and public organisations I
chose; (Sony and The British Heart Foundation) and talk about how their specific structure
and chart allows them to progress further into achieving their goals and aim through task
allocation, coordination/other activities. I will go into further detail about the types of
structures (hierarchical, flat, Matrix) and how that affects functional areas and departments
within the organisations hence having a beneficial or disadvantageous long-term effect on
the businesses’ aims and purpose. Both Sony and The British Heart Foundation have
various functional areas where factions of different skillsets and expertise cooperate to
progress faster into achieving their aim as a business. They both have a strong vision which
encourages employees and other stakeholders to result in triumph.
Organisational structure of Sony (business 1)
Sony is a multinational company with a large scope/size which characterises itself across
secondary, tertiary, and quaternary sectors hence why Sony’s complex structure of
hierarchical and elements of matrix are displayed. This is due to Sony ranging in many
industries (electronics, music, entertainment, finance, etc) where each segment has their
own chart of the most authoritative and least authoritative - hierarchical structure. Here, the
lead colleagues command operations to be accomplished by colleagues of lower influence.
As a result, successful task cooperation and coordination may occur depending on
communication across employers. An advantage of Sony having a hierarchical structure is
that they have distinct lines of authority which hold responsibility for the Company’s
reputation. Shareholders and managers are the coordination centre of Sony, running and
organising projects and schemes. It will keep Sony in a progressive flow hence maximising
efficiency and work ethic put in by employees. Low-influential employees are the receptors
of Sony, reporting positive or negative information and data to their higher counterparts
which then group decisions and meetings can be made to help further improve the business.
In this hierarchical element of Sony, there are also chances of promotion. A disadvantage of
Sony having a Hierarchical structure is that there may be difficulties with communication
across employees. This may be due to lack of interest or time from either party. This means
that suggestions and vital meetings from staff may not be delivered hence leading to
potential decline in profit and therefore decline in the company. The Hierarchical structure
can also lead to bureaucracy restricting the employees’ freedom. This may lead to employee
dissatisfaction often stunning the progress made by workers.
Some aspects of Sony are a matrix structure like other large companies. This is because
employees from different functional groups may collaborate to work on a project e.g. (game
producer from PlayStation may work with a movie producer from Sony pictures as they have
similar talents and are working on the same operation; they could be working on producing a
movie about a game.) These are the vague elements of matrix structure that Sony has.
, The aims and objectives of Sony
Private organisations always aim to maximise profit rather than falling into risk of bankruptcy.
They compete among other companies to avoid potential takeover by a rival or potentially
take ownership of the rival company. This can pose as an objective for a company. Other
companies may have objectives to attract investors by proving their reliability through
consistent revenue and income as well as attract consumers through good relationship with
quality suppliers. Sony identify as a tech company who also have some noticeable aspects
of entertainment/movie production. Their main aim is ‘to achieve further growth and enhance
its long-term value.’ Like other colossal companies, Sony wants to think ambitiously in order
to start productive and growth mindset thinking among employees which will have a ripple
effect throughout the staff. They want each employee, regardless of their status, to have the
same work ethic and aspiring vision. This is evident through their mission statement; ‘to fill
the world with emotion through creativity and technology’ and ‘to inspire and fulfil curiosity.’
The purpose of this is to set a good impression toward both internal and external
stakeholders and promise them the beneficial social intentions for the community Sony has.
This puts Sony a step ahead of other private businesses as they raise awareness and focus
on things outside their business - ethical culture, citizenship, responsibility. This presents
them as a company which nurtures the environment and social life as well as displaying
themselves as selfless and generous due to having projects run which do not earn any
money but rather earns the public’s wellbeing. Furthermore, this will assist Sony’s aim to
expand (as they will be earning the attraction of the public) and will enhance the philosophy
and ethos of the business.
Subsequently, Sony has two main objectives built around their aim and mission statement to
result in triumph and success. One of which being; to maintain its position as a global leader
