Discuss the s/s , screening, transmission, treatment, education for chlamydia’s for chlamydia. ANS -
Asymptomatic
- Cervicitis, lots of discharge
- Screening: annuals <25, MSM, HIV+, high risk
- Transmission: sexual contact and vertical transmission
- Diagnosis: culture, non-amplified tests (urine, cervical, urethral)
- Tx: azith 1 gm po x1 OR doxycycline 100 mg po BID x7 days

for rescreening 3 months after treatment
*pregnant patients OR alternative treatment given should be retested after 3-4 weeks for TEST OF CURE
What are the four rational prescribing principles. ANS Maximizing effectiveness of med, minimizing side
effects, minimizing cost, customizing an agent for an individual
Who controls prescriptive authority? ANS Individual state.
Where do most medication errors occur (HINT: beginning and end) ANS Prescribing and administering.
Define adverse drug reaction. ANS Unintended and undesired that occurs in doses used in human for
prophylaxis, diagnosis and therapy or response that is noxious and unintended and occurs at doses normally used.
Define side effect. ANS Predicted effect that occur with therapeutic doses of medication, they are not life
threatening, do not require stopping the medication.
What are the steps of rational prescribing? ANS 1.Make a specific diagnosis
2.Consider the pathophysiology of the DX
3.Select a therapeutic agent based on the pathophysiology
, 4.Select the drug of choice (Based on pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and cost
5.Determine the appropriate dose regimen
6.Devise a plan for monitoring the drugs action and determine an end point for therapy
7.Plan a program of patient education
Define adverse drug event. ANS Harm from use of the drug, may be secondary to increasing or decreasing the
dose, or discontinuing the drug.
Define drug efficacy. ANS Maximum response achievable from an applied or dosed agent. Therapeutic
effectiveness.
Define therapeutic index. ANS -Therapeutic index = LD50/ED50
-A drug with a narrow TI has a narrow margin of safety
-A drug with a wide TI has a wide margin of safety
lethal dose/therapeutic dose
It's a number, the window is a range
What is a generic name? Example? ANS Official name assigned by the manufacturer with the approval of the
U.S. Adopted Name Council (USAN). Examples: metformin or ibuprofen.
What is a trade/brand name? Example? ANS Patent name given to the medicine by the company marketing the
drug. Examples: Glucophage or Motrin.
What is a black box warning? ANS A black box warning appears on the label of a prescription medication to
alert consumers and healthcare providers about safety concerns, such as serious adverse effects or life-threatening
risks. A black box warning is the most serious medication warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration.
Define first pass metabolism. ANS Oral medications pass from the intestine directly to the liver by way of the
hepatic portal blood flow.
Many drugs, such as nitroglycerin and estrogen, are extensively metabolized to inert compounds when they first
pass through the liver.
