Intraveneuze katheters
Omschrijving ‘katheters’
= alle buisjes die kunnen worden ingebracht in een patiënt met als doel
vloeistoffen of gassen in (en/ of uit) de patiënt te brengen, of drukmetingen te
doen.
Het woord komt van het Oude – Griekse werkwoord: naar binnen brengen.
o Katheteriseren: inbrengen van katheters.
o Katheterisatie: het uitvoeren van de handeling ‘katheteriseren’.
Het aantal type katheters en het aantal toepassingen zijn sterk
toegenomen.
Intraveneuze katheter (I.V.)
= een buisje dat in een vene of ader wordt ingebracht met de bedoeling om een
infuusvloeistof of medicatie in de bloedbaan te brengen en een bloedafname te
doen.
Andere toepassingen dan een intraveneuze katheter
o Blaaskatheters: om urine te draineren.
o Epidurale katheters: om een patiënt lokaal te verdoven t.h.v. rug en
benen.
o Endotracheale tube: buisje dat in luchtpijp wordt aangebracht en dat
dient om een patiënt te beademen en eventueel gasvormige
medicatie toe te dienen (is ook een katheter, ook al wordt het een
‘tube’ genoemd).
Het plaatsen van IV katheters door Belgische verpleegkundigen
Sinds 1990 mogen Belgische Verpleegkundigen zelfstandig IV katheters (enkel
perifere venen, dus in arm of been) plaatsen.
Koning Boudewijn gaf de toestemming
o Hij nam deze handeling op in de afgebakende lijst van technische
verstrekkingen die verpleegkundigen mogen doen.
o Hij plaatste deze lijst in het staatsblad.
Tegenwoordig is het een belangrijke taak van verpleegkundigen, maar dat
is niet altijd zo geweest.
o In 1950 werd de plaatsing nog door artsen gedaan, maar het was de
taak van de verpleegkundige om het nodige materiaal te
verzamelen enz.
o Het betekent dus dat verpleegkundigen het materiaal moesten
herkennen en ook moesten weten hoe ze ermee moesten omgaan.
