,Abstract
In commission of the Dutch organization “Kenniscentrum Zoetstoffen”, an organization which
goal is to inform consumers about artificial sweeteners on an evidential basis, I tried to answer
the question: “Is aspartame consumption in food and drinks safe for healthy adults?”.
To answer this question I searched the literature on the database PubMed. My conclusion is that
although aspartame is not recommended trough the Health Council of the Netherlands as a “good
food”, it is safe for healthy adults to consume aspartame up to 40 mg/kg bodyweight per day.
After the literature study I interviewed ten women, aged between 30 and 50 years old, about their
knowledge of aspartame and their beliefs about the effects of intake of aspartame on their health.
My conclusion is that 50 % of the women, who all were well educated, believed that aspartame
is not healthy or has a negative effect on their health. The other 50% thought aspartame was safe.
There was a huge difference of the knowledge level about aspartame between the women. My
advice to the Kenniscentrum Zoetstoffen is to aim their communication on the well educated
women and to emphasize the information about the safety of intake of aspartame is all evidence
based.
