Gregorio Fuentes was a fisherman and the first mate of the boat ‘Pilar’,
belonging to Ernest Hemingway. He was born in Lanzarote in the Canary
Islands. He went to sea as a deck boy at the age of 10 and as a teenager he
worked on cargo ship out of the Canary Islands to Trinidad and Puerto Rico.
Fuentes is credited by some as a model for Hemingway’s protagonist Santiago
in The Old Man and the Sea. He was a lifelong cigar smoker and died of cancer
in Cojimar in 2002.
