expansion made in the area of railroads, steel production, and electricity. However,
industry expansion was very unregulated and led to monopolies, worker abuse, and
corrupting the political process. One of the most important was worker abuse. Child
labor was present because with the rise of machines came small hands needed to fit in
small spaces. This would've set back society immensely had it not been stopped. Many
families at the time would rather keep their kids working then educating them to make
more money. Without restrictions on working hours, companies could exhaust and
exploit others.

gold was found in California in 1848 and Colorado and Nevada 10 years later. Mining
was the beginning of immigration to the west. In the mid-1800s cattle ranches popped
up in the West and due to the demand for meat, the West became a center for
slaughtering. The homestead act of 1862 allowed farmers to get land and by 1880
nearly 22,400,000 hectares of "free" land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads.
Around the 1890s the frontier was closed and there was no longer an unknown part of
the country with miners ranging all over the West and establishing small communities.
Native American culture believes in harmony and respect for nature. Having people who
didn't look like them come from places unknown to them to them to mine the earth was
a violation of their beliefs. Also, they felt very frustrated and threatened by people trying
to take away lands that they had been claiming for a long time. The Dakota even
declared war against the US. There were Apache wars in the southwest which led to the
loss of many lives. There was even an attempt to establish schools to assimilate Native
Americans into our culture but they refused. In 1887, tribal and US lands were divided
and finally, there was some peace. However, the issues of discrimination and
oppression against Native Americans still remains today.
