For the two problems given below, show ALL work and always write appropriate units at all times
1. You have samples of 3 different dandelion poisons. They cost $10 a gallon, $20 a gallon and
$30 a gallon respectively. You would like to determine which one is the most effective. State
your hypothesis, design an experiment, and state a result that would support your hypothesis.
(1 point)
a. My question: Does the difference in the price of the dandelion poison reflect their
effectiveness?
b. Research: Review of literature suggests that not all concentrations of poisons are
effective against dandelions.
c. Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that there is a direct relationship between the price of the
poison and it’s effectiveness, meaning that highest costing poison will be the most
effective.
d. Experiment: In order to test my hypothesis, the 3 dandelion poisons costing $10, $20,
and $30 will be applied to 3 different pieces of 5sqft patches of dandelion land. The
death and decay amongst the patches of land were then recorded
e. Results: The results showed that the patch of dandelion land that had the $30 poison
applied to it had the fastest rate of death. The patch of land that had the $20 poison
applied to it had the second fastest rate of death. The patch of land that had the $10
poison applied to it had the slowest rate of death. The control patch of land which had
no poison applied to it had no death.
f. Conclusion: The results suggest that the $30 poison was more effective than the $20
poison, which was more effective than the $10 poison. This suggests that the difference
in price is due to their effectiveness, thus confirming my hypothesis.
2. If a medicine has a dosage of 20 ml, how many doses are in a 4 gallon bottle? (1 point)
a. Answer : 757.08 doses or 757 doses
b. Work: 1 gal = 3785.4 mL , 4 gal = 3785.4 x 4 = 15,141.6 mL , 15,141. = 757.08 doses
3. If you have a car that gets 30 miles to the gallon and fuel currently costs $2.60 a gallon, how
many miles can you drive if you have 5$ worth of fuel? (1 point)
a. Answer : The $5 worth of fuel will result in 57.69 miles
b. Work : 30 miles for 1 gal & 1gal = $2.60 , $2.60 = 30 miles , $5 = (30/2.60) x 5 , $5 =
57.69
4. Aluminum has a density of 2.7 g/cm3, how much space in cm3 would 100 grams of aluminum
occupy? (1 point). Show all work.
