5-2 Project One In the field of criminal justice, professionals are faced with making decisions
using discretion on a regular basis. According to the textbook, Ethical Dilemmas and
Decisions in Criminal Justice, discretion is the authority to make a decision between two or
more choices. (Pollock, J. M. 2018) In the criminal justice field all professionals exercise
some sort of discretion. Police officers have some of greatest levels of discretionary power, if
not for them, the others would not have to exercise their discretionary power. Police officers
have the power to take someone into custody and deprive them of their freedoms. They also
have the decision on what level of force is appropriate for a situation, including taking one's
life to protect someone else's. Prosecutors hold have a great deal of discretionary power, to
whom and how charges are filed, which cases can be dropped whether to pursue the death
penalty in homicide cases. (Pollock, J. M. 2018) In the corrections system, probation/parole
and corrections officers all have the capability to exercise discretion. Corrections officers
have to decide when and who gets write ups for institutional infractions as well as what items
can and cannot be in a person's possession. Parole and Probation officers decide whether they
will site or report an individual for violating the conditions of their release. Discretionary
power, integrity and authority do go hand and hand but they all vary to some degree. In the
criminal justice field, integrity is described as "a serious impediment to the success of any
