Core notes for CAPS and IEB OTHELLO 2024
developed to aid in reading the play and developing ideas for literary essays

Created by Alex Nicolin (BA History and Drama, PGCE History and English)

, The Men:
OTHELLO:The central protagonist
respected and passionate hero
position of power - general in army
falls prey to Iago's manipulation
He becomes a misguided figure consumed by jealous
obsession, initially portrayed as intelligent but later shown
to be naïve and vulnerable to manipulation.

IAGO: The antagonist
personal motivations for vengence
underlying prejudice
manipulative
cynical view towards women
He lacks redeeming qualities but he may draw admiration
from audience and he is brought to justice by the state

MICHAEL CASSIO: The foil
contrasts Othello
sophisticated soldier who values duty, honour, and
loyalty.
Cassio's promotion to governor of Cyprus highlights that
moral integrity is acknowledged and rewarded, despite his
flaws with alcohol and a questionable relationship with
Bianca.

RODRIGO: The fool
Wealthy and foolish
Infatuated with Desdemona
Easily deceived by Iago:
steals his fortune
convinces him to pursue Desdemona
encourages him to pick a fight with Cassio
Realises Iago’s betrayal when it is too late leading to a tragic
and farcical death

, The Ladies

DESDEMONA: The wife
young, innocent, and loyal.
contrasts with more pragmatic characters
warm and vibrant
Despite her purity, she is complex. She shows
sacrificial love and forgiveness
Desdemona's tragic fate is portrayed as
undeserving.

EMILIA: The mistreated
Emilia is Iago's wife and Desdemona's lady's
maid
faces emotional abuse from her husband stays
loyal to her husband until she learns of his
plan
She bravely speaks the truth, defends Desdemona,
and remains loyal despite the consequences.

BIANCA: The exploited
lower-class, sex worker
unrequited feelings for Cassio
Despite being rejected, she remains hopeful for
recognition - she elicits empathy due to her poor
treatment. She survives on meagre male
attention and has authentic love for Cassio
