Assignment 3

Explore European History: Unity Through Time!

With our exhibition, we want to showcase Europe’s development of unity and disunity by
considering the expansion of this phenomenon showcased in art pieces from the ancient to
the modern period.

With today’s happenings and political conflicts, this exhibition can awaken a sense of
reflection in the viewer and give possibilities to grasp the above mentioned themes of unity
and disunity, influencing global matters. Additional to cultural engagement on this topic, it can
furthermore trigger a sense of belonging from a humanist perspective, going beyond the fact
of sharing the same background, but striving for a sense of belonging together – Unity.

By combining religious and historical artefacts in our exhibition we delve into the evolvement
of those periodical times. By showcasing this involvement of diversity in cultural backgrounds
we see how the concept of unity has been conceptualised, and implemented which then
leads to unity or has been dismissed leading to disunity.

Our exhibition is about the theme of “unity” throughout the history of Europe. We have
chosen five art pieces to show the different forms of unity because unity is complex and
multi-faced. Unity has taken different meanings over time. The history of Europe is marked
with unity and disunity because there have been a lot of periods of conflict and attempts to
reach unity on the whole continent. Europe has a rich cultural heritage filled with European
literature, philosophy, art, and music that served as a source of unity.

The exhibition aims to present a balanced and nuanced perspective of Europe’s historical
(dis)unity, cultural and artistic unity, and the political unity that has taken place in the history
of Europe. It highlights Europe’s ability to evolve, adapt and seek unity in a changing world.
