Crime can go unreported for several reasons ranging from social and cultural to the
victims personal reasons,in crimes such as domestic abuse they may go unreported
because the victim has groomed by society to feel ashamed or embarrassed to tell
anyone that they are being abused especially if the perpetrator is someone of a high
status or well liked within a community, they may be even more reluctant because they
think that no one will believe them over the perpetrator as they are a well respected
individual.this has a negative impact towards society because the more unreportings
lead to more unrecordings meaning we as a society aren't aware on the rate its
happening as currently less than 24% of domestic abuse cases are reported, this leads
more vulnerable people to fall a victim to domestic abuse because the perpetrator is
confident as they believe that they won't get caught by anyone let alone the
police.Another personal reason may be that the victim isn't aware that what they are
experiencing is in fact a crime as they are so normalized to their loved ones behavior
whether that be there partner, family member or even a close friend. On the other hand,a
social and cultural reason would be our lack of knowledge as people surrounding the
victim may not know that this is a crime or something worth reporting as domestic abuse
is most commonly taken place in a hidden place such as their home moreover those
people may not know how to report a crime especially domestic abuse as when the
reportings can be unsuccessful ( only 2.1% of cases are successful) the perpetrator
may take revenge on the victim if they are accused of being an abuser.

Another crime that regularly goes unreported is honor crime, a personal reason why
honor crime goes unreported would be shame, many victims may be afraid to stand up
as they dont want to bring shame on there family or community as they may think what
the possible consequences for their family and friends moreover, the victim may not
report as they dont want to experience the embarrassment that comes along with
admitting that they are a victim to such crime.however, people who witness these
crimes may not report because they aren't directly affected by this crime, it might seem
as “none of there business".Additionally the perpetrator may be a close relative to the
victim which pushes any ideology that they could have possibly done something
detrimental to a loved one.but in reality 72% of honor crimes are committed by a family
member of the victim. On the other hand, social and cultural reasons could be because
the uk is a multi-cultural society , these crimes may be too complex to understand or
report as in some parts of the world they may see it as a tradition, such as fgm is
practiced in many african counttries but in the uk its illegal and hugely frowned upon
however many people nowadays may be deterred to report because they dont want to
seem offensive towards certain cultures but more then 60,000 girls aged 0-14 are at risk
of being a victim of fgm.furthermore, there is a lack of media attention on the more
minor honor crimes that can take place more reguarly then murder.lack of media
attention turns into unreportings because without the media raising awareness we dont
see how often honor crime happens, in 2010 it was released that 2,823 have been
