*Functies : - beschermen van de thoracale ingewanden
-ademhaling toelaten

Ruimte thorax wordt hoger en zuigt lucht aan door druk
Lengte : -Neemt toe van rib 1-7
-Neemt af van rib 8-12
Soorten :
*Costae verae 1. Starten aan wervel en lopen door tot aan borstbeen
-ribben 1-7
-maken contact met sternum
*Costae spuriae 2. Maken geen contact met sternum (daarom valse ribben)
-ribben 8-12
-bereiken het sternum niet
Rib 8-10 vast aan bovenliggende rib
Rib 11-12 vrij in de buikwand (= zwevende ribben )
-Delen :
1. Os costale (= benig deel dorsaal)
• caput costae of ribkopje maken gewricht met wervel
• collum costae of ribhals
• angulus costae of ribhoek
• corpus costae of riblichaam
2. Cartilago costalis (= ventraaal kraakbenig deel)
*rib 1-7:
-rechtstreeks contact met het sternum
*rib 8-10:
-kraakbenig deel sluit aan op kraakbeen bovenliggende rib
-arcus costalis of ribbenboog: bocht gevormd door het kraakbeen van de ribben
7-10
* rib 11-12:
-kraakbenig deel eindigt los in de buikspieren
