There are various mechanisms that organisations can use, in combination, to
become a learning organisation. Apply any FIVE of these mechanisms to the
Michelin company throughout its history of publishing the Michelin guide. In
your answer, you need to identify the mechanism and then apply it to the
company (10).

The rapid changes in today’s business environment requires organisations to quickly
learn and adapt for the long-term survival of the organisation. Without proper
adjustment of the organisational structures and culture, no organisation can remain
valiant in this volatile environment due to fierce competition and ever-changing market
trends and patterns. The Mechlin company displays an evolutionary organisation
where it transitioned from being a well-known tire manufacturer to a global leader in
fine dining through its issuance of its Mechlin Guide. This example displays the
excellence of how organisations can learn and adapt to changing environments. The
mechanisms which Mechlin have used to become a learning organisation include a
shared vision, team learning, mental models, personal mastery and systems thinks.
These mechanisms will be discussed in the passages which follows.

Building shared vision

Research by Mitchell (2024) highlighted that leaders are supposed to build genuine
visions that inspire lower-level hierarchies and employees. The reason for setting
inspiring visions is to ensure that employees are always motivated to carry on their
duties in both good and bad times. Thus, it aligns the organisational efforts and
employees to work towards the same goal hence eliminate conflict of interest (Venter,
2016). As highlighted in the case study, the Mechlin’s vision of promoting road travel
with an endeavour of boosting tire sales was a driving step towards the creation of the
Mechlin Guide in 1900. Thus, both management and employees used this shared
vision to integrate their efforts leading to far more expansion beyond the tire
manufacturing activities to a global fine dining.

The perfect execution of a job requires continuous learning an individual or a team.
This process involves training on the best ways to carry out the tasks while given
adequate time to reflect if there is growth form the acquired education (Tournier, 2022).
Engagement in team learning in an organisation encourages collaboration as Well as
exchange of informative ideas which improves the decision-making processes and the
level of innovation (Venter, 2016). Thus, the evolution of Mechlin Guide proved to be
progressing as it changed from being merely a motorist guide to a recognised dining
guide. According to the article, the Mechlin team had to adopt to changing consumers
needs by increasing their inspection on restaurants quality and innovations, resulting
in the creation of the prestigious Mechlin star system.

Developing systems thinking abilities

According to Menatti, Bich and Saborido (2022), systems thinking entails the ability of
an individual to see big picture of the presiding patterns on how a set goal can be
achieved. Roslan, Hasan, Zaremohzzabieh and Arsad (2021) also defined systems
thinking as the understanding of an organisation through integrating interrelationships
between different sects and how they affect organisational objectives (Vachliotis, Salta
& Tzougraki, 2021). It encourages organisations to have an overview of how the
changing environment has influence over their organisational structure, culture and
processes (Mitchell, 2024). For example, the Mechlin company used its systems
thinking abilities to adopt to changing environments by its decision to charge the Guide
in 1920 after a discovery of the Guide’s misuse. This pricing of the guide led to the
recognition of the guide as a premium product hence readers started to show respect
through their careful use.
