Athenians - Much different from the Spartans- centered in Attica, did not practice farming. Had a
democratic government(510BCE) and excelled in art, theater, architecture and philosophy.
Fought the Spartans in the Peloponnesian war: 431-404BCE
Ancient Greek contributions to cultural development - Greek playwrights laid the groundwork for
modern theater. Greek alphabet developed into the Roman alphabet and then to the modern
Alphabet. Geometry, historical writing and philosophy all started in Ancient Greece.
