Dr. Thoma’s Exam 2
BIO 112 Study/Starting Guide 2024
Caveat emptor: This is a partial study guide based on what we have learned in previous years. We will
revise it as we go. You can use this as a tool, but don’t use it as a crutch. A complete study guide
for our tests would include this document plus textbook chapters, PowerPoint files, linked videos,
lecture notes, etc. etc. In other words, there is no guarantee that every question on the exams will
be represented here. Most will, but you are responsible for all the material covered in class, not
just what’s here.
Recommended uses of the Study Guide:
1. Write out answers in your own words to each objective.
2. Read the study guide before, during, and/or after each class.
3. Use the study guide to help you know when to ask questions in class, and what to ask.
4. Come to Dr. Hensley’s office with questions based on study guide objectives.
5. Email questions to Dr. Hensley, but don’t just say “I’m having trouble with #6” because Dr. H.
doesn’t have this study guide memorized…so ask the question in terms of BIOLOGY not in terms of
study guide numbers.
6. Use your textbook and the internet to look up related information as you work on writing answers
to each objective.
7. Ignore this study guide for weeks at a time if you don’t really care about learning the material or
don’t care about your grade.
Best Study Practice:
1. Throw away your highlighter.
2. Get some colored pens and pencils
3. Pick a topic (a small as a single vocabulary word, or a single objective off this guide, or something
much larger).
4. Put away all notes and books, pull out a blank piece of paper and pick a neutral color like black ink
or regular pencil.
5. Write down everything you know about your chosen topic (definition of terms, diagram showing
the relationship of ideas (concept map), explanations of ideas, etc.)
6. Now open your books/notes/PowerPoint, etc. and check your work, using colored ink to correct,
improve, and expand what you did in pencil. Your neutral color now shows what you KNOW and
your bright colors now show what are still working to learn.
7. Repeat the process with a different topic, or repeat with the same topic on a different. day. Your
brain will recall your bright colored work from previous attempts and you can incorporate it into
what you KNOW on this later try.
