Chapter One We centre on Greg Owen, who is rumoured to be dead in
Venice! Greg reflects his recent experiences, including the
details surrounding his alleged death and the four others
accompanying him in Venice at the time. Greg's reflects a
noticeable change in his home in Sandhurst following his father's
arrest and his departure from Lawson College and the death of
his older brother John Owen, a thrill-seeker who died of a pill
overdose. Greg also hints at some tea spilled between him and
his father but we will get back to that. Greg is now moving to
Stellies for a fresh start. The sadness that stays in the family
home is addressed again when Greg visits his deceased
brother's untouched room when his mother walks in to share her
grief.
Chapter Two Greggy wakes up in John’s Room ready to go to Stellies. He
packs his things into his BMW 118i, when an unexpected
memory flashes in his mind, a painting by Conrad Botes on his
brother's wall, a memento he decides to take with him. For a
second he has a schizo moment and hears his brother's voice
but gets over it quite quickly. He says adios to his mumsy,
promising to update her on his arrival in Stellies. On the drive he
reminisces about the towns he passes. He reflects on his
hacking exploits with Eckardt Wilken (a hottie), which led to the
exposure of ‘Project Nursery Rhyme.’ This involves viral
manipulations of flu shots. He remembers the court hearing of
his father and remembers seeing a mysterious woman there as
well. He recalls memories of his boyfriend Plank (sorry just
friend), who is attending Maties, the same as Greg. He arrives in
Beaufort West after a long drive: He opts to stop over for the
night at a guest house in the town.
Chapter Three He wakes up disrupted by a talkative tannie at a B&B who
interrogates him about his dad. Greg storms out of the B&B and
continues his journey. Greg heads to his newly rented bachelor
pad in Van Riebeeck Street, Upon his arrival, he encounters
Chloe. She introduces herself by jokingly volunteering to be
Greggies meisie. Greg gets to his pad and as he is settling in,
he’s visited by his friend Plank. Ignoring his unpacking, Plank
insists on taking Greg for a pizza and a beer, welcoming him to
“Matieland”.
Chapter Four He gets his university books from Van Schaik Bookstore, and
participates in first year orientation week activities. One day,
Chloe insists that Greg take part in a street theatre event called
"Vensters," a mix of music and drama centred around social
awareness issues. Greg eventually immerses himself in the
practice sessions, painting backdrops and bonding with fellow
students. During the evening of the "Vensters" event, Greg feels
overstimulated by the energy of the event, which triggers a wave
of self-consciousness. He sees a mysterious woman who
triggers his anxiety. He feels unable to go on stage. A drunk
student recognizes Greg as "the guy who turned his father in"
This makes Greg feel alienated and anxious.
