Wat is de criminologie?
Een “bastard science” (Sellin), Newborn Britse criminoloog: ‘strange beast’, Een rendezvous subject
(Downes) beroemde criminologen die criminologie als iets vreemds zien
Geen duidelijk materieel en formeel voorwerp, criminologie doet beroep op gegevens, inzichten, vele
andere sociale wetenschappen zoals psychologie intrinsiek en multidisciplinair (doet beroep op
meerdere disciplines)
Garland (2002): twee hoofdkenmerken
o Empirisch gegronde, wetenschappelijke aanpak: willen op empirische wijze criminaliteit
aanpakken
o Focus op criminaliteit
Twee projecten
o Het Lombrosiaans project: vader v.d. criminologie, Lombroso was de eerste die deze
empirische studie is begonnen te doen, hij onderzocht de oorzaken van criminaliteit,
fundamenteel onderzoek,
o Gouvernementele project: advies geven aan beleidsmakers (tegenstrijdig met lombrosiaans
project, die heel afstandelijk te werk gingen)
Definitie criminologie
“the study of the process of law-making, law-breaking and law-enforcing” (Sutherland 1937) te breed en te
smal!
Definitie prof: de studie van gedragingen en activiteiten die gecriminaliseerd zijn of als schadelijk/deviant
worden ervaren (incl. hun actoren en oorzaken), de (de-)criminalisering, controle en preventie ervan en de
andere maatschappelijke reacties erop. Einddoel: schadebeperking in brede zin (voor slachtoffers,
maatschappij,..)
